Biography of George Smeenge

George Smeenge

George & Henne Smeenge have lived in Laketown Township since 1979. We love our old 10 acre Bauhahn farm in rural estates neighborhood. We both enjoyed many years of Sales & Marketing work and enjoyed helping people enjoy good products & service. Many family outings, reunions, church work, golf, bowling, and photography on computer, provide great memories for our 50th wedding anniversary in 2008.

Service is a great satisfaction to me, having been with US military for 5 years, Michigan National Guard for 8 years, National Exchange Club for 10 years, and with Laketown Township Planning Commission for 7 years. In 2007, Terry Burns, our County Commissioner was discussing a need for senior members on our Commission of Aging. He invited me to interview with County Board and I am now serving a 1 year term.

Aging can be difficult, but we have been blessed with good genes and good health. To be able to help needy seniors is a truly gratifying experience. Many families take care of each other, but many seniors are alone, can’t drive, are disabled, or in poverty. With our federal, state, county and local programs we can all find a place to volunteer to help our seniors be active and enjoy the better “quality of life” they deserve. It’s heartwarming to serve!
